How I Balance School, Work, & Life as a Beauty Student

Let’s be real, being a beauty student is no joke. Between long hours at school, studying for state board exams, practicing services, working part-time, and still trying to have a life, it can feel like you’re being pulled in a million directions. If you’re juggling it all, you’re not alone, but trust me, it is possible to find a balance, even if some days are a little hectic.

Here’s how I manage to keep school, work, and life in harmony while chasing my dreams in the beauty industry.

I Treat My Schedule Like a Non-Negotiable

Just like applying daily SPF, planning is a non-negotiable for keeping my life in balance. I use a digital calendar to map out school hours, time to do my part-time work throughout the week, practice time for exams, and rest.

Pro Tip: Color code everything! It helps me visually separate school, work, personal time, and appointments. I love to create a color palette for my calendars to make them neat and aesthetically pleasing.

Prioritize Like a Pro

Not everything needs to get done at once. I’ve learned to break things down between what’s urgent, important, or can be saved for another day. I learned from college that not everything has to be done immediately. Doing an all-nighter is not a must, plus I can’t handle them like I could when I was barely 20 and drinking Red Bull throughout the day. Some nights, skipping Netflix to finish a study guide happens, so I’m not staying up too late.

My Trick: If it brings me closer to my goals, like passing the state board, it gets top priority.

Set Boundaries (Even With Myself)

Burnout is real in the beauty world. I know how to balance school and part-time work after doing it for the past few years, but even I have to remind myself to take breaks to prevent burnout. Stop overcommitting and start saying no, without feeling guilty. Whether it’s turning down an extra shift or putting my phone on Do Not Disturb using study time, I protect my energy because I know I can’t pour from an empty cup.

Maximize “In-Between” Time

Time in transit, lunch breaks, or even waiting in line? Those are golden moments. I’ll review flash cards, listen to a skincare podcast, or brainstorm social media content for my website and social media account during those micro-moments. Small chunks of effort add up and they matter.

I Make Time for Joy

Yes, I’m busy, but I refuse to lose myself in the hustle. I make space for things that recharge me: a face mask, a walk, playing video games, and eating out at my favorite places. This isn’t just a grind. It’s a journey I want to enjoy. Balance isn’t about doing everything; it’s about doing what matters, with intention.

I Give Myself Grace

Some days are smooth. Others, not so much. I’ve learned to stop being so hard on myself. Progress over perfection. There will be late nights, rescheduled plans, and moments of doubt, but I remind myself that I’m building something amazing. One step at a time.

Balancing school, work, and life as a beauty student isn’t always easy, but it is worth it. I’m learning discipline, time management, and most importantly, how to show up for myself and my dreams. Whether you’re in esthetics, cosmetology, nails, or any other beauty field, just know: you’ve got this!

And if you ever need a reminder, I’m cheering you on. This journey is better when we support each other. Follow along @SkinByIsabela for more behind-the-scenes of beauty school, life, study tips, skincare education, and student esthetician realness.  💕✨
