How to Keep Your Skin Glowy & Not Greasy in the Heat ☀️
Warm weather is officially here, and while we love the sunshine and bronzed glow, the humidity and heat can leave skin looking more greasy than dewy. If your face turns into an oil slick by midday, don’t worry. You’re not alone, and you don’t need to sacrifice glow for control.
I’ve crafted you the only summer skincare you’ll need to stay radiant, fresh, and not shiny in the wrong ways.
Hydration All The Way 💧
Hydration is everything, especially in the heat. Dehydrated skin can become greasy, as your skin overcompensates by producing more oil. This will lead to unwanted shine.
Extra Tip: Swap thick creams for lightweight, oil-free gel moisturizers with ingredients like hyaluronic acid of glycerin to keep your skin plump without the heavy feeling.
Cleanse Gently, But Thoroughly 🧴
Summer sweat and SPF can clog your pores and dull your glow, but you also don’t want to over-strip your skin. Harsh cleansers that overly strip the skin can lead to more oil production. Similar to dehydrated skin, overly-stripped skin will try to overcompensate by increasing oil production.
A gently foaming cleanser or gel-based cleanser at night can help remove sweat, sunscreen, and impurities without disrupting your skin barrier.
SPF Is Your Friend
All skin, no matter the type, needs SPF. Not all sunscreens are made equal, though. For those with acne, oily, or sensitive skin, look for a lightweight non-comedogenic sunscreen that won’t lead to breakouts. A matte finish can help with oily complexions. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide can be good for sensitive and acne-prone skin.
Pro Tip: I love to go with a tinted sunscreen and then set my makeup with a powder sunscreen.
Add A Balancing Toner Or Essence
A good toner or essence can help control excess oil without drying you out. (In case you’re wondering what the difference is, a toner will cleanse and balance your skin, while an essence will nourish and hydrate your skin.) Choose one with ingredients like niacinamide, green tea, or witch hazel. These help refine pores, calm inflammation, and balance oil production.
Tip: Choose one with ingredients like niacinamide, green tea, or witch hazel (alcohol-free, please!). These help refine pores, calm inflammation, and balance oil production.
Serums For A Glow, Minus The Shine
The right active ingredients can help you get the soft, lift-from-within look. The key is layering. (Quick tip for layering your products: go from lightest to thickest with your products.) Vitamin C can be perfect for giving you a bright and even look. Apply it with your morning products before your SPF.
Blotting Paper Is An On-The-Go Savior
Blotting paper can absorb oil throughout the day without disturbing your glow or your makeup. If blotting paper isn’t your thing, setting powder can help too. My go-to is Supergoop! (Re)setting powder. Their shimmery setting powder adds a glow to any look.
Treat Yourself To Summer-Friendly Facials 🧖♀️
Monthly facials can. Help deep-clean pores, calm inflammation and redness, and boost hydration. Treatments that include massage, gentle exfoliation, and LED can help soothe your skin and keep it glowing throughout the summer.
Summer skin should feel light and fresh. While we’re trying to keep it safe, some sunscreens can leave you feeling heavy and dull instead. With a few seasonal swaps and smart ingredient choices, you can stay glowy and not greasy, all summer long. Your skin can (and should) thrive all year long. You just need the right routine.
